Bluenote coffee - delicious marketing...

Bluenote Coffee Vision

The vision and market branding of our concept client, Bluenote Coffee, came very fluidly and very rapidly. A marketing premise was already set by the title of the product, which described the quintessence of the brand. The concept that we felt would carry the most power in the current market was to make the brand completely transparent to the consumer.The campaign needed to reflect the timeless, honest simplicity of the product, to express it more succinctly, or an enforcement the old adage ‘it does what it say’s on the packet’ – it’s a laid back, blues themed coffee. These brand characteristics dictated which artistic avenue we needed to pursue, and allowed us to fully interpret, then mesh, two strong design concepts into a successful market branding influencing the current demographic trends.

Exploration

Before we started to consider the best graphic design for market branding, we needed to take into account the current demographic trends for coffee. We spent the time needed to analyze the most prolific user demographic, and sub demography’s, so we knew where the commonalities lay. After understanding the consumer tastes and needs, we then discussed concepts and the best graphic design that would reach the current demographic trends. This did not take long as creative process moved on rapidly and at an extremely high quality. It was a project that refreshed everyone with excitement and vigor, with many choices of themes and nuances that made a great design outstanding.

Completion

The substance of the Bluenote Coffee design portfolio was a play on the colour blue, with a sub topic of jazz motifs, to reinforce the brand to the consumer visually as well as through text. By using a monochrome we focused the attention on the jazz motif, bringing out the feelings expressed by the colour blue and the emotion of music. By visually stirring emotion within the consumer we forge a bond to the brand as these emotions attach the pleasing feeling of drinking coffee to the Bluenote brand. Blue suggests cool, deep, secure substance and is associated with a fresh, solid atmosphere, highlighted by music notes that lead the consumer to dream, relate to and bond with the brand, which is the essence of Bluenote Coffee.

When I was in University corporate image was THE buzz word for marketing. Everything lead back to corporate image – marketing established corporate image, focus groups provided feedback on corporate image, mission statements defined corporate image, even pre-calculus factored corporate image (ok, so maybe I’m stretching it a bit), but these days corporate image is considered ‘old news’ and less than applicable. Anyone wandering down this dangerous train of thought could be building a kill switch into their company. Corporate image may no longer be the buzz word, but it should be the code you live by and at the center of all you do. Corporate image should mean excellence in everything.

Corporate image is the composite psychological impression consumers have of a company. It is little more than the public perception of your company rather than an actual reflection of its state or position. Every department, worker, correspondence and behavior sent out from your company makes up your corporate image. Good corporate image is vital to business growth and sustainability. So how do you create a corporate image that rivals Bill Gates in success and Mother Teresa in honesty? The fluid nature of corporate image makes keeping a positive position much harder. One unfortunate happening or decision, and you can switch from flavor of the month to dog of the day at the flip of a coin.

Establishing an image that is robust and consistent is the basic building block of a good image. If there is a foundation of positive image consistently coming from the company the buy in to trust is easier. For instance, if a client comes to visit and your selling your products from the back of an old 1930’s camper van with one headlight in the parking lot, the judgment is made about the quality of your company, integrity and product as a whole in an instant. If you send out your invoices on a crumpled piece of paper with a whacking great big coffee ring on it – don’t expect another order anytime soon.

Something as simple as a logo, letter head or web page expresses who you are and what you are about. First impressions aren’t one thing – they are the only thing! You only get one shot at a first impression, make sure it’s expressive. Make sure everything that leaves your company has the company theme on it. Get a great logo, go the extra mile with your printing, make your web design unforgettable. Spend a bit more to add a touch of luxury, go and find the talent you lack that makes the difference. These are all basic elements to establishing a robust corporate image that can weather a storm – or scandal –or two. Make sure your buildings are neat and tidy; your employees are positive and care about what they do, especially in the customer care department. It may sound anal, but it’s the way good images are made, and kept. With corporate image – consistency is the bomb.

Once you have a good design and a great marketing plan for all your media and communication, all you have to concentrate on is the ‘human’ element of your company image. With something as important as the corporate image of your company, do not be afraid to ask around, interview marketing companies and see their portfolio. They are used to having their craft examined. They should be able to express what you envisage and nurture your ideas into a solid influencing image. Torren and Smith is our concept for a well-established business law firm – solid, dependable and constant. With design art you have to have a theme or concept in mind to direct the flow of the creativity. Selecting the right foundation to build the campaign on, is always critical to the final designs. Torren and Smith had a company image to uphold, and the graphical representation had to align itself with this branding.

The premise that the whole project needed to be based on was ‘classical’. Solid, dependable and constant all have an infinite appeal and excite feelings of trust, integrity and confidence. These are classic concepts and we wanted to play them to their full advantage. Twist The classical element had many options, but we wanted to give it a twist that allowed Torren and Smith to own the design concept. After a quick fire concept session we compiled a list of potential images that were unmistakeably classical, which we then detailed as to how we could produce them as an ‘alter ego’. Our aim was to take the two opposing themes and meld them into a new concept. In effect, make the classic – modern.

Color is always a huge investment in the voice of any media. It is as important as the art itself. Again our course was directed by the resolute identity of the company image making sure that we carried on the theme of ‘classical’, solidifying the company brand. Fusion The searing of old and new was steered by the use of black and white photography and familiar objects that expressed business, justice and the unchangeable.

The use of a well-recognized statue unmistakably suggested these three qualities, but to fuse it to the modern we had to take an unusual angle with an artistic lens to create an image that was intriguing and attractive without losing these essential qualities. A watch was used to infer a timeless aspect to justice, and a classical looking man in crisp attire for unchanging, and each was manipulated by intelligent use of photography to bring it around to a fresh appearance. The Logo was a clean line drawing of a column that also embodies the brand, and all these carefully planned and crafted aspects came together to achieved an unspoken strength, interwoven with art, that does not come about without perseverance, intelligence and flair.

The ROI on SEO

The use of search engine optimized writing (SEO) has been the mainstay of all internet offerings for a long time. The cold hard fact is that anything that has been built around specific keywords will improve the pages performance in the rankings and the return on investment (ROI). In short, SEO optimization works … for a while. To keep ahead of these figure manipulating words, search engines continuously tweak or change the algorithms that control the ‘bots’ that collect the ranking data.

To get the best ROI on your SEO content make sure you follow the latest guidelines, but there are some basic rules that are not susceptible to the whim of the bots. It’s easy to do, but don’t get slavishly carried away with SEO, never forget you’re writing for humans not bots. No one wants to read content that is obviously optimized for search engine ranking – not even the bots! The search engines are looking for good quality, natural content and ranks it higher because excellent content sells.

The corporate image of a search engine is based on the quality of information it provides and turning out pages of trash does not impress the public. Help the bots recognize your page, but make sure the content is King – who wants to read bad content, no matter how high in the rankings it is? If you listen to the myths out in internet land, keyword density is 1/100, keywords need to be used in a title or subtitle and Elvis is alive and well and SEO copywriting in Dead Mans Fang NB. That may have been the case, but not so much now. Keyword density has moved over the make way for readable, informative and engaging content. Don’t worry about how many times you use a keyword, just use the key words naturally and concentrate on saying something enthusiastic, educated or intelligent. Who goes to the internet for fun anyway? Oh yeah, grumpy cat followers …

When writing SEO content think ‘Scrabble’ – in a way, that’s what the bots do. When you use a keyword, try and link it to other words. When the bots trawl a page the not only look for known keywords or phrases, they look for related keywords and synonyms. This is LSI or Latent Semantic Indexing. The bot is trying to match the words typed in to the search engine with an appropriate page, so the more it recognizes keywords and synonyms, the higher your page will be for that user. It is also a MASSIVE advantage to writing good content. If you can use a similar or linked word instead of the keyword over and over again, you’re not constantly trying to ram the keyword up the user’s nose. Believe me, they’re very picky about things like that.

The average length of a front page web ranking is 2,000. This is a tricky one to successfully incorporate. If content is King, 2,000 words of content does not always make you the best of the best of the best. If you can write an in depth report and have it educated and enchanting, do it! But if you can’t make it educated and enchanting – save yourself the shame! Throwing in bigger words and rewriting the question over and over again like you did in high school finals will not work. For instance; If you’re writing 2,000 words on the contents of your mothers wallet – stop when there is nothing left to say, even if it’s only 300 words. More isn’t always better with SEO, more sometimes just means … more.

Don’t be afraid to write round a long key word. For example, you can write based on ‘new car’ and the results will be high – so will the competition. Writing based around ‘How reliable is a new car’ narrows down the field and will get you higher in the rankings. A bonus is – you’ll come up in the ‘new car’ search rankings anyway. Answering a typical question a consumer may ask is always a good idea as it helps raise your perception as being authoritative and knowledgeable on the required subject.

One thing you need to do to optimize your optimization is to make sure you are shared. Any avenue that gets your link on a page boosts your rakings. Google+, forums, twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, blogs, etc all provide a double edged service. They get your name and company out there, but also leave a bread crumb trail of backlinks for the bots. The bots see the back link on other media and think, ‘This piece is really popular and relevant, everyone needs to know about it’, and voila! Bot propulsion. Taking a little time to write what is worth reading is the best ROI you can get on your SEO. It takes skill to write a great piece and make it SEO rich for the current batch of bots, but it can be done. Do what you need to make it worth your while or its waste of words – and a waste of space. Dare to make it so … or you can always turn it over to Elvis.
